Traffic to shift on stretch of Highway 502

A section of state Highway 502 will move to a new alignment starting Tuesday as crews work to expand the roadway, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Traffic will be shifted on a stretch just west of Dollars Corner, between Northeast 50th and 72nd avenues. Drivers will move from the existing roadway to a newly constructed portion to the north. The shift will allow utility workers to relocate service lines during the winter without impacting traffic, according to WSDOT.

The move comes as WSDOT winds down work on the highway for this year. Major work will shut down for the rainy season on Oct. 15 before resuming in early May. Some utility and bridge work will continue, but earth work becomes difficult and costly when the ground is saturated, according to the agency.

Workers are widening Highway 502 to four lanes between Interstate 5 and Battle Ground. The $85 million project is expected to be completed in 2016.
