PORTLAND — Police say a Pomeranian dog was fatally mauled by a pit bull Wednesday night on a Portland streetcar.

The Oregonian reports that one witness says a woman and her pit bull boarded the car in northwest Portland and the larger dog almost immediately lunged at the Pomeranian already on board.

Witness Cole Vliet-Sutten says the pit “put its mouth over the other dog’s head” in an attack that he describes as “a horror scene.”

As passengers screamed and urged the woman with the pit bull to do something, Vliet-Sutten says she eventually pried the dog’s jaws open and the smaller dog escaped.

The owner rushed the injured dog to an emergency veterinary hospital but police say it did not survive.

Police say there was no apparent criminal behavior by anyone involved.
