A Des Moines city council member has quit the council after being accused of slapping a 6-year-old special needs student on a school bus.

The former King County Superior Court judge and bus driver for the Highline School District announced her resignation in a letter Wednesday.

A criminal complaint has been filed in SeaTac Municipal Court that charges Jeanette Burrage, 62, with fourth-degree assault. Burrage is a former state lawmaker and judge.

March 10 school district surveillance footage showed a driver slapping a child, who was standing on a bus seat in the midst of an apparent meltdown.
