Longview man forgiven $5,000 water bill blames illegal pipes

LONGVIEW — The city of Longview has forgiven a man’s $5,000 water bill after determining that someone had tapped into his pipes.

The Daily News reports that 44-year-old David Cooper received the bill for March. It claims he used 1.2 million gallons — the equivalent of two Olympic-sized swimming pools — at the duplex he rents.

But Cooper said his former landlord, who lived next door but died several years ago, was to blame. The landlord apparently installed some illegal pipes to bypass his own water meter, and last month, when a pipe burst under a garage next door, the bill came to Cooper’s account.

Assistant City Manager Kurt Sacha said last week Cooper only has to pay an amount equal to his average monthly water bill.
