Letter: Trust is safe in Planned Parenthood

The Columbian
Published: August 1, 2015, 5:00pm

A series of secretly filmed, deceptively edited videos are part of a coordinated attack orchestrated to ban abortion and to defund Planned Parenthood, which would cut 2.7 million people off from receiving birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, STD testing and treatment, and other preventive health care services.

As president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette, I’m responding to James S. Roberts’ July 27 letter, “Truth hard to uncover.”

The videos show more of the same pattern of fraud from fanatical extremists. They posed as health care workers and badgered a longtime physician for hours, trying to get her to discuss unethical and criminal activity that she doesn’t engage in or know anything about.

There is nothing in these videos to suggest any violation of law. These tapes are heavily doctored, and the full tapes disprove the outrageous, false charges that Planned Parenthood profits from women’s decisions to donate fetal tissue.

Planned Parenthood is the most trusted women’s health care provider in this country, and nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our patients. We are fighting back hard and calling this latest attack campaign what it is: a component of a decadelong campaign of deceiving the public, making false charges and terrorizing women and their doctors, all to ban abortion and cut women off from care at Planned Parenthood.
