Boost for more full-day kindergarten classes

Clark County — Another 359 schools in 139 districts statewide will begin receiving state funding for full-day kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year. When the school year begins, 847 schools in 261 districts will provide state-funded full-day kindergarten, according to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

The state Legislature approved the additional funding in its most recent legislative session.

Clark County districts providing state-funded full-day kindergarten are Battle Ground (Maple Grove School); Green Mountain School District (Green Mountain School); La Center (La Center Elementary).Ridgefield (Union Ridge Elementary); Washougal (Cape Horn Skye Elementary and Gause Elementary) and Woodland (Lewis River Academy).

Although the county’s largest districts, Evergreen and Vancouver, already provide free, full-day kindergarten, some of their low-income schools received state funding for full-day kindergarten.

Evergreen will receive funding for Burnt Bridge Creek, Columbia Valley, Riverview and York elementary schools. Vancouver will receive funding for Dwight D. Eisenhower, Sacajawea and Salmon Creek elementary schools and Vancouver Home Connection.

Battle Ground was one of six districts that chose not to accept the funding for next school year because of lack of enough classroom space. Although the district will offer state-funded full-day kindergarten only at Maple Grove School, it did not accept state funding to provide full-day kindergarten at Captain Strong, Daybreak, Glenwood, Pleasant Valley, Tukes Valley or Yacolt primary schools because it does not have enough classroom space.

As the state continues to increase funding for full-day kindergarten, schools with the highest percentage of low-income students are eligible to receive funding first.
