UO raises $214 million toward $2 billion goal

PORTLAND — A new president is leading a $2 billion capital fundraising effort at the University of Oregon on the heels of a record-breaking year for donations.

The $214 million raised this past fiscal year is the second-highest the school has ever seen, the Oregonian reported. The university has raised $827 million toward its goal and, as of June 30, gifts and pledges had increased by 86 percent compared to the previous fiscal year.

President Michael Schill started at Oregon July 1 and has a track record of raising money for schools, including the University of Chicago.

He’s taken three out-of-state fundraising trips so far and is starting to meet with alumni across the state.

Schill replaces an interim president who led the school after two predecessors left the office. Donations increased despite the changes in the president’s office and an ongoing process to settle a lawsuit brought by a student who said she was raped by three UO basketball players.

Vice president for university advancement Michael Andreasen says Schill’s vision for the university is about quality of faculty and affordability for students.

“To have a transition year essentially, and to have such an outpouring of support, I think is a remarkable statement,” Andreasen said.

The university’s previous capital campaign lasted eight years, ending in 2008 with $853 million raised.

Andreasen said this new campaign could take eight to 10 years to finish.
