The youngest of 13 siblings, Adele Gustafson was born July 25, 1915, in Wilmar, Minn.

After graduating from high school, she became a nurse for the Anoka (Minn.) State Hospital.

She later met Edward Brabec at a young people’s gathering, and they married in 1938 in a ceremony at her parents’ house, where her brother Ervil officiated.

In 1952, the couple moved to Vancouver, where Edward worked in construction and eventually started his own company, Brabec Construction.

The couple have three children, six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Adele was active in Girl Scouts and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Hazel Dell Grange for many years. She also helped at election polling places.

Adele said she enjoys meeting people, hearing their stories and sharing comfort or advice. According to daughter Maureen, many of the kids’ friends would come over not to see them but to share some problem with their mother and seek her advice.

Adele, with family and close friends, recently celebrated her 100th birthday on July 25 at the Rio Vista Adult Family Home in Vancouver, where she and Edward, 99, live.
