Hawaii first team to clinch regional semifinal

Oregon suffers first loss at Junior League tourney at Propstra

The all-stars from Pearl City, Hawaii, clinched the top seed from Pool B with a 4-2 win over Centennial of Sparks, Nev., on Saturday at the Junior League Western Regional tournament at Propstra Stadium.

By completing its pool play schedule 4-0, Hawaii will advance to the Tuesday semifinal against the No. 2 team from Pool A.

Carter Hirano drove in two runs in Hawaii’s win as Nevada fell to 1-2.

Pool play continues through Monday. Both semifinals are set for Tuesday, and the championship for a berth to the World Series in Taylor, Mich., is on Wednesday.

In other games Saturday:

Northern California 12, Montana 2 — David Martinex went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI as Gilroy improved to 2-1 in Pool B and gained an edge on the second semifinal spot from that pool. Billings, held to two hits in the five-inning game, fell to 0-3.

Utah 9, Oregon 5 — Snow Canyon pounded out 13 hits on its way to the win over Beaverton/Aloha. It was the first loss for the Oregon team (2-1 Pool A), and first win for Utah (1-2). Cade Guerisoli was 3 for 4, and Tim Shakespeare was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI for Utah.

Arizona 4, Southern California 1 — Jorge Bojorquez and Paul Carreno combined on a three-hitter as Nogales National improved to 2-0 in Pool A. Bojorquez and Carreno each had two hits and drove in a run. Manhattan Beach, Calif., is 1-1.
