Chuck Knight, who coached the Camas girls basketball team to the Class 4A state tournament this winter, has resigned.

“I just felt like it was the right time. The program is in phenomenal shape. Whoever steps in will step into a gold mine,” Knight said.

The coach, who lives in Vancouver but works in Canby, Ore., said he is looking at other opportunities. He has a few options, he said, but did not want to go into specifics.

“We’ve had a good run,” he said of being with the Papermakers. “I have nothing but good thoughts and memories of Camas. I wish them nothing but the best of luck.”

Rory Oster, Camas’ athletic director, sent an email to parents of basketball players, informing them of Knight’s decision.

“The Camas High School Athletic Department would like to thank Coach Knight for all the effort and hard work he has put into the basketball program over the past five seasons,” Oster wrote. “We are very appreciative of the growth he has brought to the program and wish him well in his future career pursuits.”

Oster said the school has started its search for a new coach.

Camas reached the state’s round of 16 in 2012 and again in 2015.
