GLENWOOD — Crews on the Cougar Creek Fire south of Mount Adams are bracing today for a gusty cold front, with winds expected to whip up to 35 miles per hour through Thursday night.

Fire lines on Tuesday were reinforced along the west and south flanks and fuel burned out on the east flank. Crews will try to solidify the east flank line today, according to Washington Interagency Incident Management Team No. 5.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from 2 p.m. today through Friday. Strong winds combined with low relative humidity and high temperatures will mix to increase the fire.

Cooler temperatures are expected Friday, but the weather will stay dry and windy.

Crews will be paying special attention to look for wind-driving spot fires outside the line.

Tuesday, the fire increased to 500 acres for a total of 23,100 acres. The increased acreage was from burnout work.

Almost 450 personnel are fighting the blaze, which began from a lightning strike 10 days ago north of Glenwood.
