The Clark College men’s basketball team was tested early before running away with a 97-69 road win at Pierce College.

Leading by one at halftime, the Penguins used to 22-3 run to break open Wednesday’s game in Lakewood.

The Penguins (3-0) withstood Pierce’s hot shooting in the first half, which saw the Raiders shoot 7 for 14 from 3-point range.

“What was exciting today is that we faced a little bit of adversity and responded, Clark coach Alex Kirk said.

David Baze scored a team-high 16 points on 7 for 9 shooting. Darrius Mathis added 14 points and six rebounds.

Clark women 67, Pierce 64 — Molly Franklin scored four points in overtime to lift the Clark College women’s basketball team.

The Penguins improved to 4-1.

Breann Neuku scored 15 points, Caylee Newsom 13 and Franklin 11 for Clark. Shantel Aleki had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

On Tuesday Clark won 63-57 at South Puget Sound. A 21-10 third quarter keyed that win. Neuku led the Penguins with 15 points and five assists and Kendyl Cone added 11 points.

Clark visits Centralia on Saturday and plays its first home game on Dec. 9 against Lower Columbia.
