Extra DUI patrols in effect until Jan. 1

Extra DUI patrols have begun statewide and will continue through Jan. 1, as part of the state’s efforts this season to curb traffic deaths related to intoxicated driving.

The Washington State Traffic Safety Commission, with help from ride-hailing company Uber, also plans to feature anti-DUI materials in bars and restaurants around the state to help remind those using alcohol or marijuana to secure safe transport while attending holiday celebrations.

In areas where Uber is available, which includes Vancouver and Portland, the company will offer a $20 discount for riders’ first trip using the promo code RIDESAFEWA.

Early state data shows more than 500 people have been killed in traffic crashes so far in 2015, nearly 100 more than were reported during the same period last year.
