Letter: Make background checks universal

Since 2000, there have been at least 147 deaths caused by school shootings. Fifteen of those deaths were students in Washington or Oregon. Seventy percent of school shootings in just the last two years have been perpetrated by minors.

Due to the high amount of student deaths, parents are beginning to have a harder time dropping their kids off at school. School shootings have rapidly reduced the amount of school enrollment, which is leaving kids without an education. Not only can a school shooting take somebody’s life but they easily affect many mentally, leaving students scared of people they once thought they knew.

These results have been represented all around the United States but they are easily affecting our community. To eliminate the effect that school shootings have, states need to require universal background checks to any buyer of a firearm. By requiring universal checks on all sales it results in there being fewer irresponsible people holding a gun and, therefore, a safer community. If states require universal background checks, it may eliminate any buyer who is not fit to own a firearm, which will decrease the amount of violence caused by irresponsible gun owners.
