MOSCOW, Idaho — Perrion Callandret scored 25 points and Victor Sanders added 20 as the Idaho Vandals edged Washington State 78-74 on Thursday night.

The Vandals (6-5) defeated WSU in consecutive years for the first time since winning three in a row from 1988-90. Washington State (5-2) had won 11 in a row against Idaho before losing last year at home.

Josh Hawkinson led the Cougars with 16 points and 12 rebounds in WSU’s first road game of the season. Ike Iroegbu and Conor Clifford both scored 12, Renard Suggs had 11, and Charles Callison recorded 10 points and seven assists.

The Vandals outrebounded their larger opponents 39-22, including 14-1 on the offensive glass. Idaho had a 16-0 advantage in second-chance points and hit 56.3 percent from 3-point range (9 for 16), compared to 36.8 percent (7 for 19) for WSU.

The Vandals led most of the game, thanks partly to Callandret’s 18 points in the first half and Sanders’ 15 points in the second half.

Que Johnson’s game-tying 3-point attempt from the left corner bounced off the far rim with approximately three seconds left and WSU trailing 77-74.

Idaho led 44-37 at the half. The score was tied at 37-37 before the Vandals scored the final seven points. Both teams shot 52 percent from the field in the half.

TIP-INS

Washington State: The Cougars and Vandals have met every season since 1905-06, making the series the sixth-longest continuous series in college basketball. The five longer series involve schools located east of the Mississippi. WSU leads the series, 162-109.

Idaho: Starting point guard Chris Sarbaugh came to Idaho as a senior graduate transfer from San Diego. Sarbaugh redshirted as a walk-on freshman at Gonzaga in his hometown of Spokane, Washington, then played one year at North Idaho (junior) College before spending two seasons with San Diego.
