Fort Vancouver point guard Kyron Lowe-Ash scored a game-high 17 points while dishing out six assists without a turnover. He capped his night Wednesday by hitting a tying layup and adding a game-winning free throw with 2.6 seconds remaining as the Trappers defeated visiting R.A. Long, 56-55.

The game-winning play was set up when the Lumberjacks missed a free throw with eight seconds left. Lowe-Ash drove to the basket, scored and drew the foul, completing the three-point play with his lone made free throw in four attempts.

Fort Vancouver improved to 3-4.

The game was a contrast in styles, as 11 of Fort Vancouver’s 18 field goals were from behind the arc while the Lumberjacks relied on superior size.

“We hit a ton of threes,” Trappers coach James Ensley said, initially over a zone defense then continuing to hit over sagging man-to-man. “We took quality shots. We had too many turnovers, but we’re a young team and that’s what happens.”

Neither team led by more than four or five points a game Ensley said was “a dogfight from the get-go.”

Coby Rothwell led the Lumberjacks with 16 points.

“They’re way bigger than us, so they pounded the ball inside,” Ensley said. “We ran and did the things we had to do to compete.”
