Letter: Spectacle of Trump is hard to watch

In a Dec. 9 story “Muslim exclusion idea inflames GOP fears of Trump,” the key sentence was, “Trump’s popularity underscores the deep divide between Republican leaders and the party’s conservative base.” Were the consequences for our country not so dire, it would be amusing to watch the Republican hierarchy deal with the base it created with Fox News, and mainstream corporate media to assure mass political ignorance and twisting Christian orthodoxy beginning in the 1930s to blunt moral outrage.

On the latter point I recommend the book “One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America” by Kevin Kruse; wherein he describes corporate backlash against FDR’s New Deal programs and the division of American society against itself in order to regain political power.

The oligarchs behind the Republican Party have always known they could not reveal their real agenda and have cleverly used focus groups to develop the language to deceive the unwary as policies have become evermore antithetical to American and Christian ideals.

Trump, the “deal maker,” has seized the opportunity this presents to co-opt the oligarchs’ creation for himself by appealing to the lesser angels of the Republican base’s character, resulting in the spectacle before us.
