Letter: There’ll always be need to help poor

Regarding the Dec. 17 story “Church backs out of homeless village,” I am disappointed. There will always be poor and homeless people. We can either turn our backs on them or help as we are called to do so. It’s not a case that the poor and homeless people will go away. We as a community will pay for assistance one way or another and I’d rather be on the side of being part of the solution.

My wife and I live close to the church area and have concerns too; like timeline, security, managing unlawful acts, etc. We were looking forward to the scheduled meeting at City Hall to hear and discuss these and other topics. The call to the church suggesting that a lawsuit would be filed if they went forward with the homeless project is disappointing to hear without even giving the rest of the community a chance to hear and listen to the proposal and provide Q&A. I applaud Safe Harbor Church of the Nazarene for the effort and hope an alternate solution will come to light.
