Banfield Pet Hospital, the Portland-based veterinary chain that is moving its headquarters to Vancouver next year, has named a company vice president as its new president and chief executive officer, effective immediately.

Vincent Bradley, who joined Banfield in 2011 as senior vice president of operations, has been focused on hospital operations and field leadership. He also has been responsible for real estate, facilities, construction, international and franchise operations teams, and for managing Banfield’s partnership and collaboration with PetSmart. Many of the company’s approximately 900 pet hospitals are located within PetSmart stores.

Banfield began construction last month on its new headquarters in east Vancouver at Southeast 184th Avenue, generally between 6th Way and Mill Plain Boulevard. The company expects to relocate more than 600 corporate office employees to the site before mid-2016.

Last week, the Columbia River Economic Development Council won the “Project of the Year” award from the Washington Economic Development Association for its work with Banfield Pet Hospital on its headquarters relocation. The effort, which went under the name Project Cocoa during the recruitment process, was one of two projects statewide to receive the award during a Feb. 4 conference in Olympia.

The Washington Economic Development Association recognized the project for its significant economic impact, its potential for replication, and broad government partnerships involving, among others, the Washington State Department of Commerce and the city of Vancouver.

“It was creative, forward-thinking, complex, involved multiple partners, and it worked. The wages the company will pay are significantly above the statewide average, are in a highly-sought after industry cluster, and as a headquarters location, will provide significant exposure to the community for future business,” said Denise Dyer, who chaired the association’s selection committee, in a statement.

Bradley, the new Banfield CEO, previously served as executive leader for Take Care Health Systems Employer Solutions Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Walgreen Co. He began his career as a teacher in Japan and the United States. Bradley currently serves on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Portland. He holds a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Miami University and a master’s degree in education from Harvard University.

Banfield bills itself as the world’s largest general veterinary practice. Founded in Portland, it has been owned by Mars, Inc., a maker of chocolates and owner of other retail and service businesses, since 2007. Banfield operates three pet hospitals in the Vancouver area and an additional 19 in the Portland metropolitan area. The company has more than 14,000 employees, including 3,200 veterinarians, in 43 U.S, states and in Puerto Rico .
