Prep roundup: Calwell swims day’s best times in 2 events at state

Camas senior goes after titles in 200 IM, breaststroke

Camas’ Kasey Calwell appears primed to claim some state championships at the Class 4A state swimming meet in Federal Way.

Calwell was the top qualifier in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke on Friday. In the 200 IM, Calwell’s time of 1 minute, 52.87 seconds was almost 1.5 seconds better than the next fastest swimmer.

Today will be a busy day for Calwell as he will also compete in the championship finals on two relays as Camas qualified fourth in the 200 medley relay and fifth in the 400 free relay. Camas also qualified fourth in the 200 free relay.

Other locals who advanced to the championship finals in the 4A meet were Lucas Ulmer of Camas (sixth 100 butterfly, sixth 100 backstroke), Mark Kim of Camas (seventh 500 freestyle), Mountain View’s Chris Xue (third 50 freestyle) and Skyview’s Jake Breuer (sixth 200 individual medley).

Hockinson’s Dylan Osborne also positioned himself for a good day today in the 2A meet.

Osborne was the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly (51.19 seconds) and the No. 2 qualifier in the 50 freestyle (21.66).

Hockinson’s Jonah Rodewald qualified third in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 200 individual medley. Hockinson also qualified fourth in the 200 medley relay and seventh in the 400 free relay.

Columbia River’s Josh Bottelberghe was the lone local to advance to today’s 3A championship finals, qualifying fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

Gymnastics

Skyview’s Miranda Lea finished fifth in the Class 4A all-around on the first day of the state championships. Lea scored 36.675. Mead’s Jenna Schlosser won the all-around at 38.100.

Lea advanced to Saturday’s finals on the beam and floor exercise. Heritage’s Nicole Moss qualified for the finals on the floor and bars.

Columbia River placed fifth in the team standings of the 3A/2A state meet. Sarah Ellis was the top local finisher in the all-around, placing 13th.

Advancing to the individual apparatus finals were Ellis (bars, beam and floor), Kenzie Moxley of Columbia River (beam) and Kylee Tjensvold of Ridgefield (bars and beam).
