Players who saw little or no playing time on Sunday figure to be in the lineup Wednesday when the Portland Timbers take on the Chicago Fire at 7:30 p.m. at Providence Park in the second of three home preseason dates.

The match is part of the Timbers preseason Simple Invitational tournament. Wednesday’s first game at 5 p.m. features the Vancouver Whitecaps against Staebek of Norway. Tickets are available.

Among the players who figure to get a long look against Chicago are young midfielders George Fochive and Nick Besler. The knee injury suffered by Ben Zemanski in Sunday’s match means that Fochive and Besler are the remaining options at the holding midfield position behind Diego Chara and Jack Jewsbury. Fochive was a 2014 draft pick and Besler was the Timbers first-round pick in January’s college draft.

This match also should mark the first starts at Providence Park for Timbers offseason signings Dairon Asprilla and Jeanderson. Asprilla, a 22-year-old winger/forward from Colombia, came on late in Sunday’s loss to Vancouver and had a sharp attempt on goal. Jeanderson, 23, is a left back from Brazil.

This will be the fifth of six preseason matches for the Timbers, who have one win, one loss and two draws so far in this preseason. They finish off their preparation games by playing Staebek on Saturday to close out the Simple Invitational. A webcast of the match will be available at Timbers.com.

• Thorns sign forward — The Portland Thorns on Tuesday announced they have signed forward Genoveva Añonma. The 25-year-old from Equatorial Guinea, who goes by the name Ayo, has 95 goals in 122 matches in Germany’s top league, where she has played since 2009. She is expected to join the Thorns in May, after the end of her current season in Germany.

“She is bright on the ball, runs intelligently and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time,” Thorns coach Paul Riley said. “She is highly motivated to play in this country and her work ethic will be embraced by the Thorns faithful.”
