A cooking fire in a manufactured home caused more than $12,000 in damage in Vancouver’s Landover-Sharmel neighborhood Tuesday night.

Vancouver firefighters were called to Acres Mobile Estates, 13401 N.E. 28th St., just after 9 p.m. Arriving crews found smoke and fire showing through a roof vent and smoke throughout the mobile home, said Chad Lawry, lead deputy with the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office.

Firefighters quickly put out the blaze.

Lawry said that the occupants of the home had oil cooking on the stove but left it unattended, and a fire started. They then attempted to put it out by throwing water on the flaming oil, which caused the fire to spread, Lawry said.

The fire caused an estimated $8,871 in damage to the structure and another $3,802 in damage to contents of the home, Lawry said.

The best way to put out stovetop fires, Lawry said, is to put a lid on it and turn off the heat. He added that a portable fire extinguisher should also be kept nearby.
