Washougal man Tasered, arrested after pursuit

A Washougal man suspected of intoxicated driving led police on a high-speed chase that ended when police used a Taser to arrest the driver.

The incident started when someone called 911 at about 11 p.m. Thursday to report a suspicious person waving a gun or knife while inside an SUV parked outside the Washougal Police Department, 1320 A St.

When officers looked, a green 1994 Ford Explorer drove away, according to Washougal police.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but police said it sped off at a high speed and drove onto state Highway 14.

Officers stopped pursuing near 192nd Avenue, but another officer spotted the Explorer near the exit for Northwest Sixth Avenue in Camas. The vehicle was speeding up and then slowing down, as if the driver was attempting to provoke a pursuit, police said. The officer, however, followed at a safe distance, police said.

Washougal officers overheard on the police radio that the vehicle was returning to Washougal and when the vehicle neared, officers deployed spike strips on the highway near Washougal River Road, puncturing three tires, according to police.

Despite the flat tires, the vehicle continued north on Washougal River Road at speeds of 30 to 40 mph, crossing into oncoming lanes of traffic, police said.

Officers ended the chase in the 3600 block with a technique designed to force a fleeing vehicle to spin sideways during a pursuit.

The driver, identified as Cameron L. Frank, 23, of Washougal, refused to comply with commands to show his hands, so officers used a Taser to take him into custody. He was evaluated by medics and found to be uninjured.

Police say that Frank’s motives are unclear but that alcohol was a factor. He was arrested on suspicion of attempting to elude police and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

The incident remains under investigation.
