PORTLAND — Thirteen Portland police officers have started carrying a drug to treat people suffering from a life-threatening overdose of heroin.

Portland Fire and Rescue trained the Central Precinct officers to administer the nasal spray to deliver the drug Naloxone, also known as Narcan. It helps reverse overdose effects.

It’s a one-year test that could lead to other officers using the treatment to prevent drug-related deaths.
