A nonprofit group focused on helping homeowners improve the energy efficiency and air quality of their homes has chosen a local contractor to offer a “one-stop shop” service for Clark County home upgrades.

Clean Energy Works, a nonprofit home performance company that expanded its services to Clark County this month, has chosen Revival Energy Group of Vancouver as its first contractor. Revival already does energy audits and home improvements in Vancouver and works with the Energy Trust of Oregon on homes in Portland.

Clean Energy Works is offering homeowners a free 100-point inspection delivered by Revival Energy Group to pinpoint essential upgrades needed to optimize their home, evaluating energy efficiency, air quality and comfort levels. The inspection measures what is going on in the house and then determines what project makes the most sense moving forward, said Robert Brierley, senior building analyst, and HVAC technician for Revival. “It makes more sense than just throwing money at a problem and hoping it goes away,” he said.

This approach is what Clean Energy Works refers to as a one-stop shop, with the aim of improving a home’s efficiency so the owner will actually save money. Revival uses software that takes into account how much a homeowner is paying in utility bills. Brierley said the software goes beyond the standard “clipboard inspection” and drills down to what a home really needs, whether it be increased insulation, repairs to a window or proper ventilation.

The overall goal with the audits is to look at the whole picture of a home, from the amount of radon in the air to the adequacy of insulation and heating systems. “We’re really looking at how all of the systems of a home are working together so that homeowners can be comfortable and safe in their home,” said Stephanie Swanson, director of marketing for Clean Energy Works.

The nonprofit, which has operated in Oregon for five years, is just starting to get people interested in Clark County, Swanson said.

In addition to the 100-point inspection, Clean Energy Works guides homeowners through the whole process, from helping them find contractors to do the work to getting various utility rebates.

“We do that investigation and that paperwork for them so they don’t have to do it all on their own,” she said.

Clean Energy Works is offering a $250 rebate to Clark County homeowners that can be applied toward whatever project the homeowner chooses. The offer was to expire on Jan. 31 but this week was extended through Feb. 28. Homeowners can visit www.cewo.org/clark and provide promo code CEREG250 to qualify.

Brierley said he thinks there is a need for awareness in Clark County that these in-depth inspections give homeowners a better understanding of where money for efficiency improvements is best spent.

“We go in and test it first before even saying what to do. They have a starting ground to go, ‘OK, I have a better understanding of it. This is how I’m going to choose to make it better,’ ” he said of the homeowners.

Clean Energy Works is also a partner in Clark County’s Planet Clark, a clearinghouse to educate people and connect them to resources focused on energy savings and efficiency.

“We’ve had a few contractors join us lately,” said Mike Selig, program manager for Planet Clark. “It’s great to see the participation and the partnership.”
