Letter: Challenge port commissioners

The Columbian
Published: January 29, 2015, 4:00pm

2007 was our last contested Port of Vancouver commissioners race? The Jan. 22 story “Political group sets sights on port” mentions Taxpayers for a Responsible Public Port as a group formed to encourage people to enter a race this fall. Good!

I don’t know this group but I read their Statement of Principles: Act Consistent with Sound Business Principles, Roles and Responsibilities — Port Commissioners and Port Staff, Transparency, Environmental Commitment, Putting the Public Back in the Port, The Oil Terminal Lease, and The Port Tax. Sounds reasonable.

I guess if I were Nancy Baker, I might say I’m “not too worried” about group, as she reportedly did. But I’d rather my commissioner would say that she realizes people are concerned about the way our port is doing business and that she wants to work with us.

The port does many good things. This effort to encourage new candidates to run and focus on these issues could make it even better.
