PORTLAND — A limited burn ban has been imposed on Portland and Multnomah County.

Legal fireworks and common barbecue equipment are still OK, but Portland Fire Chief Erin Janssens said Wednesday that open fires, whether ceremonial or recreational, are banned.

The rules are in effect throughout Multnomah County.

State law forbids the use or sale of any fireworks that fly, explode, travel more than a foot into the air, or more than six feet on the ground. Violators face fines and can be held liable for damages they’ve caused.

Over the past two years, 282 citations totaling nearly $150,000 were issued for those firing off illegal fireworks.

Residents can report the use of illegal fireworks by calling a new hotline: 503-823-BOOM.
