Letter: Raise our levels of respect

The Columbian
Published: July 2, 2015, 12:00am

We forget that our individual rights are only protected respecting the rights of others. A flag is just not a flag — when you walk by any flag think about what it represents.

When you disrespect the rights of people different than yourself, it hurts everyone.

Some people in today’s world think they can solve problems with guns. We have had more people killed by white terrorists in this country than any other faction.

Does it make you feel better to call someone a racial name or someone else a bigoted name? The definition of racism and bigotry is the poor treatment of someone different than yourself. Our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights provide equal rights for all people. There are no provisions for exceptions.

Please, along with myself, think about what you can do to make your neighborhood and community a better place to live.
