TROUT LAKE — The Horseshoe Fire on Mount Adams has grown to 340 acres as of this morning, according to Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the Washington Incident Management Team.

In a news release this morning, the agencies said the largest of the four fires making up the Mount Adams Complex had grown 90 acres overnight. The cause of that fire, which was reported July 3, hasn’t been determined.

The three smaller fires were sparked by thunderstorms on Thursday.

The fires are currently 15 percent contained, and 345 personnel are on scene, officials said.

According to the news release, cooler temperatures, high humidity and low fog are affecting firefighting efforts. Low fog, for example, has grounded air support and made it difficult to organize reconnaissance missions and deliver supplies.

The largest of the three smaller fires is the 63-acre Riley Fire, located one mile north of Horseshoe. Crews today are preparing hoses and pumps for low impact containment to suppress the fire, according to the news release.

The 7 Lakes Fire, only one-tenth of an acre in size, is near containment. Heavy fog, meanwhile, is making it difficult to find the Canyon Fire, also believed to be one-tenth of an acre.
