Hulu considers selling an ad-free streaming service

Hulu, the video streaming service where you can binge on “Seinfeld” and (unwittingly) commercials, is considering a premium service tier that would cut the ads.

The subscription video-on-demand service already has a paid subscription option that, for $7.99 a month, gives subscribers access to a wider range of content. Now Hulu is eyeing a second, ad-free option that would launch as early as this fall and cost $12 to $14.

The ad load has long been a complaint. When users took to social media to blast the ad breaks after “Seinfeld’s” launch on the site, Hulu’s Twitter account replied that it hadn’t ruled out an ad-free plan.

Hulu has relied on advertising to help pay for expensive programming like “Seinfeld.” For shows that are available to stream the day after airing, Hulu splits the ad revenue with the shows’ TV networks.
