Man taken into custody after six-hour standoff at Vancouver apartment

A man who barricaded himself inside a Fisher’s Landing East apartment on Tuesday morning was taken into custody after a six-hour standoff.

Officers with the Vancouver Police Department were called to an apartment complex at 16506 S.E. 29th St., at about 9 a.m. when a woman reported that her son was at her apartment in violation of a restraining order, according to Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp.

The 24-year-old man has some mental health issues and was possibly off of his medication, acting erratically, trashing the apartment and throwing items out of the window, Kapp said. No weapons were known to be in the man’s possession or in the home, Kapp said.

Vancouver officers called the on-duty SWAT team, which includes an armored vehicle, and tried to negotiate with the man, but that did not work, Kapp said.

The full SWAT team, the Southwest Washington Regional SWAT team, was called to the scene at about noon. They made entry and took the man into custody just before 3 p.m., Kapp said.

The man was transported to an area hospital, Kapp said, adding that those with mental health issues typically complete a 24-hour hospital stay.

The man will eventually be booked into the Clark County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated assault, vandalism and violation of a restraining order, Kapp said. His name was not released Tuesday.
