The economy-priced apparel and home merchandise retailer Marshalls will open its first Vancouver store in the Hazel Dell Marketplace near the Northeast 78th Street-Interstate 5 interchange, according to mall owner C.E. John, a Vancouver-based real estate development, construction and management company.

Marshalls will open a new 21,500-square-foot store in at the marketplace next summer, C.E. John said in a news release. The nearest Marshalls stores are at Cascade Station and Lloyd Center, both in Portland. At the end of 2014 the retailer operated 975 stores in 46 states and Puerto Rico.

The arrival of Marshalls is in addition to the previously announced entry into the mall of Sports Authority , which is set to open its store in the mall in mid-October. Colorado-based Sports Authority operates more than 450 stores in 45 U.S. states, including a store at Cascade Station in Portland.

In addition, Wendy’s is moving to a new location across the street from the Sports Authority. The fast-food chain’s prototype store is set to open this month, C.E. John said.

As part of the new development, C.E. John said it intends to construct six additional buildings, adding more than 60,000 square feet of new retail space to the 180,000-square-foot shopping center. Several other deals are “in progress” with national and regional tenants for the existing shop space and new planned buildings, the company said. Additionally, the entire shopping center will receive an exterior face-lift beginning this fall, its owners said.

The shopping center is at 408 N.E. 81st St., just west of the Northeast 78th Street interchange on Interstate 5. Major anchor tenants include Safeway, Ross Dress For Less, Tuesday Morning, and Round Table Pizza.

“This development, in addition to the existing shopping center buildings, will position Hazel Dell Marketplace as the premier shopping and eating destination for the west side of Vancouver,” said Walker John, President of C.E. John.

“This has always been a successful shopping center, and we are excited to expand and upgrade it through the redevelopment.”
