Letter: Water, water … but not everywhere

Fairly mature trees were recently planted at the intersection of state Highway 14 and Ellsworth Road. The majority of them have died — I assume from lack of water. These were expensive trees, and it doesn’t make sense to allow them to die.

In the July 22 story “Vancouver residents urged to water,” residents are being encouraged to water their lawns to “reduce the risk of a blaze after months of dry weather.” City Manager Eric Holmes stated, “Vancouver is in the luxurious position of having a tremendous water supply.” If that is true, why are expensive trees allowed to die? These particular trees are in a location where a cigarette thrown from a passing car will surely start a fire.
