Letter: Nourish our urban canopy

The Columbian
Published: July 27, 2015, 5:00pm

After reading the July 22 story, “Vancouver residents urged to water,” I am glad to see that Vancouver is not experiencing a water shortage. If what City Manager Eric Holmes says is true, then why are many of the young trees in this great city under stress from too little water?

As a volunteer of Portland’s Friends of Trees, I have helped plant many of the trees along the roadways in Vancouver. I have seen many of these trees with signs of water duress. I urge both residents and the city to help give these young trees a fighting chance to live by providing them with 5 to 10 gallons of water a week.

Vancouver has been a Tree City USA since 1989 by continuing to support the urban canopy. Let’s keep that going by making sure that our trees are getting watered.
