Letter: High expectations for port officials

The Columbian
Published: June 2, 2015, 12:00am

We have an expectation our elected officials should always be correct in their actions, even when evaluated in hindsight and using various individuals’ criteria. If we imposed such an expectation on ourselves before we were able to exercise our right to publicly criticize, write an editorial or attempt to recall an elected official, there would be total silence.

The Port of Vancouver commissioners are talented and dedicated individuals who, on behalf of the community, have made excellent progress in the port’s development. In addition to the public’s common interests, the commissioners are responsible to achieve certain objectives in a fiduciary manner.

Safety is expected and practiced in all port operations. However, no operation is accident-free. Remember, the commissioners also live in and want the best for this community.

If there was no demand for oil, there would be no need to transport oil by rail or through any port. If you are opposed, don’t buy, sell, transport or use such products, but respect the right of others and the port to do so.

Please, respect everyone’s right to have and voice any point of view. Simply having a point of view does not make you correct.
