RICHLAND — The Hanford Advisory Board is unhappy about the Department of Energy’s proposed budget for the Hanford cleanup.
The Tri-City Herald reports that the board sent a letter to regulators after a meeting Thursday to discuss the proposed annual budgets for the next two years of the Hanford nuclear reservation.
The board acknowledged that after years of budgets failing to budget to meet environmental cleanup requirements, it is hard to develop budgets for 2016 and 2017 that meet them now.
DOE representatives say the budget would need to double from its present level to meet environmental cleanup requirements.
Hanford is located near Richland and is engaged in cleaning up the nation’s largest amount of nuclear waste. The waste is left over from the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons.
