Letter: Guard Earth from perils behind oil

The Columbian
Published: June 17, 2015, 12:00am

Most of us appreciate the magnificent mountains, valleys, beaches, high plains, rivers and lakes that make up our “earthly” home. So why don’t we understand threatening dangers? The pending oil terminal and trains will send tons of coal and barrels of crude oil right through town. This pollution won’t happen just here in Southwest Washington; we are sending it to the far reaches of Asia, unless, of course, some of it goes up in smoke with a derailment, spewing boiling oil over a half-mile radius.

We can’t use the excuse that the world “needs” our fuel, that this leads us to energy independence or that it will put people to work. The people who will benefit most are the oil companies and the railroad companies.

So if you’re interested in preserving Mother Earth, vote for Eric LaBrant for Port of Vancouver commissioner, District 2, to stop this debacle.
