A man accused of striking another man with a steel bar made a first appearance Friday in Clark County Superior Court.

Gerald L. Cameron, 41, a transient, faces an allegation of first-degree assault in connection with the Thursday afternoon incident.

According to court records, the assault happened near state Highway 14 and Southeast Columbia House Boulevard.

He allegedly struck Gary J. Sommerville four times with a steel bar used to lift weights, hitting him in the head, arms and torso. The victim reported having numerous cuts and a gash to his head, as well as a concussion. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Superior Court.

On Friday, Judge Daniel Stahnke appointed Steven Rucker to represent Cameron. His bail was set at $100,000.

Cameron is scheduled to be arraigned June 26.
