LAKEWOOD — Pierce County food banks and are bursting with food such as honey-baked hams and tri-tip steaks after the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay donated roughly 70,000 pounds of leftovers.

The News Tribune of Tacoma reports that pallets of food were trucked Tuesday to Lakewood to the warehouse of the Emergency Food Network, the Pierce County nonprofit that distributes goods to local food banks and shelters.

The network is the first group after a U.S. Open that’s been able to successfully take the entire surplus from the event.

Ridgewells Catering director of major events Andrew Chalfant says the company has tried to find places to donate the leftovers after other U.S. Opens events, but most food banks can only take some items.
