Letter: Move to strike Citizens United ruling

The Columbian
Published: June 29, 2015, 12:00am

Our communities and our country function best when our government listens to the people. Currently we are in a situation where our voices are being outweighed by corporations and special interests. This issue has been growing for some time but has accelerated with the U.S. Supreme Court decision referred to as “Citizens United” that granted corporations the same rights as people and equated campaign donations with free speech.

I hope you will support Initiative 735, a citizens initiative that would make Washington the 18th state to call for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to correct this dangerous situation. We need our legislators to be responsive to our needs as citizens and therefore I-735 is referred to as the “Of, By, and For the People Act of 2015.”

To learn more, come to the Cascade Park Public Library at 6 p.m. on July 9, where we will have a movie screening and discussion about this important issue. We will also have I-735 petitions available to sign or to take if you are interested in assisting with the signature-gathering effort. More information is available at www.wamend.org.
