The Clark College men’s basketball team enters today’s NWAC Championship tournament in Kennewick with the West region’s No. 1 seed, the same as last year.
But unlike last year, the Penguins enter with more than just one loss. They have six and didn’t run away with their region.
The No. 2-ranked Penguins (21-6) open play at 6 p.m. in the Toyota Center against Treasure Valley (14-13) of Ontario, Ore., the No. 4 East seed.
Treasure Valley had to win a tiebreaker on Monday with Spokane to reach the NWAC Tournament.
Win or lose, the Penguins will face either No. 2-ranked Bellevue (25-4) or Umpqua (19-9) in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. Sunday or consolation at 8 p.m. Sunday.
The double-elimination tournament runs through Tuesday.
The Clark women’s team is in the NWAC Tournament for the sixth consecutive season. The Penguins (15-9), the No. 4 team from the West, will play No. 2-ranked Walla Walla (21-5) at 10 a.m. today.
Clark will play either Bellevue (21-8) or Southwestern Oregon (16-11) of Coos Bay, Ore., in the next round. A championship quarterfinal would be at noon Sunday, or consolation game at 8 a.m. Sunday.
