Clark County’s annual State of the County event serves two purposes: the first, and the usual, a celebration of the county’s accomplishments over the past year, complete with speeches from county leadership and awards for those who have dedicated their lives to public service.

But the second purpose, and perhaps the most important to local families in need, is to replenish the shelves of the Clark County Food Bank.

The State of the County event kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Skyview High School, 1300 N.W. 139th St. Speeches begin at 4 p.m. The event is free.

Collections of nonperishable food will be taken for the Clark County Food Bank and its partner organizations.

Donations to the food bank this time of year are particularly critical, as most donations received during the holidays have been distributed to families and donations slow, county spokeswoman Mary Keltz said.

“The overall need continues unabated,” Keltz said.

Last year’s event provided 300 local residents with five days’ worth of meals, she said.

County Councilors David Madore, Jeanne Stewart and Tom Mielke will speak, as well as Sheriff Chuck Atkins and Acting County Manager Mark McCauley.

Todd Coleman, chief executive officer for the Port of Vancouver, will also speak.

The councilors will also present the 2014 Spirit of Clark County awards for extraordinary efforts by volunteers in 2014.
