Letter: Policing is two-way engagement

I share the outrage Al Anderson voiced in his March 9 letter, “Defenseless left with little hope,” regarding police killings of unarmed minority citizens. But I would invite him to go one step further, and learn about our local law enforcement and get involved in his neighborhood association.

I am member of West Hazel Dell Neighborhood Association and recently attend the Clark County Sheriff’s Community Advisory Board meeting. I learned of a deputy who speaks six languages and is available to other deputies at any time. We have deputies who carry spare coats, shoes and socks in the trunk of their patrol cars for the indigent. Our law enforcement program is what we make it to be. It is up to voters as to who is in charge and how they run the department.

The reports of police shootings are disturbing and alarming, but they are not in our county. I urge everyone to get involved and learn about our local law enforcement. We are all safer if we know our officers, and they know us. Community policing is a two-way commitment.
