Several posts that hold up a walkway along the Columbia River near Interstate 5 were damaged in a fire early Monday morning.

Firefighters were called at 2:17 a.m. to the area near Joe’s Crab Shack, 101 S.E. Columbia Way, for a fire under the pier, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said.

Firefighters extinguished the flames but not before several large posts that support the concrete walkway were damaged, Scarpelli said.

The fire started in an area where the city of Vancouver restricts public access, Scarpelli said. The fire was most likely an illegal transient campfire that got out of control, she said.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage, Scarpelli said.
