Letter: Why vote Republican?

The Columbian

This is a serious question. We now live in a country that is a two-party dictatorship. Republicans took control of both the House and the Senate in the last election cycle, but you’d never know it. Executive overreach continues unabated, and the only real power the Congress actually has — the power of the purse — might as well not even exist as it remains in disuse.

Even our own local Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, has voted to keep John Boehner as “weeper” of the House, for the “Cromnibus” spending bill, and for HR 240 to fund the president’s unilateral, and arguably illegal, action on immigration. What’s next? Is she going to vote funding to make even more types of hunting ammunition illegal? With friends like her, who needs enemies?

What’s even worse is that she won’t take any critical questions from constituents. I know; I have tried.

Maybe we’ll know more when she debates her next primary opponent, who will hopefully have the fortitude to challenge the executive branch no matter who sits in office. I look forward to that day.
