Letter: Guard against falls

The Columbian
Published: March 26, 2015, 12:00am

Everyone seems so much happier in the past several weeks, as the weather has been bright and sunny. Of course, I’ve enjoyed the warmth, too, but this weather also brings sadness and fear to me. This is because I know it’s the season when little kids in the Pacific Northwest will fall out of windows. I know this because my son fell out of his bedroom window when he was almost 4 years old.

Every time I hear of another child falling out of a window, I have a sense of desperation. I just wish I could have reached those parents before it happened to them. I wish the message had gotten through to us before our son’s fall, and saved us all the heartache and despair and regret that we now live with.

Please tell everyone you know who has kids younger than 7 that they should install window stops or window guards on any window more than 6 feet from the ground. This is a different thing than a window lock.

The Campaign to Stop Window Falls, www.STOPat4.com, has more information.
