Letter: Economy succeeds via consumers

I wanted to help Dennis Rozario with his April 27 letter “Reverse decline by your vote,” where he addressed Democrats as taxers and spenders. Need I remind Rozario that in the past few decades, the only president to create a budget surplus was William Jefferson Clinton? How can anyone forget the man in the White House who squandered that surplus by reducing taxes and invading a nonthreatening country known as Iraq?

As for spending, I invite the author to review WalletHub.com, which shows that of the 15 states getting the most from their tax dollars, only one is considered a blue state. The first five are as follows: South Carolina, North Dakota, Florida, Louisiana and Alabama. In fact, for every dollar in taxes paid by South Carolina residents, they get a return of $7.87. Now that is worth writing a letter about.

It is the conservative mantra to support big business beyond what is beneficial to all sides. It is not business that creates jobs. It is the consumer who buys the products made by big business. See how many of those companies would be hiring if very few bought their goods or services.

History shows what happened in the late 1920s when lack of regulations and excess abuses created the Depression. Let’s not go there.
