Clark College to host authors at free Columbia Writers Series

The Columbia Writers Series from May 18 to 22 offers a variety of free literary events at Clark College, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way. Events include internationally celebrated authors and readings by Clark students, faculty and staff.

• Artists and authors panel: The Craft of Comics: 10 a.m. to noon May 18, Penguin Union Building 161.

• Reading by Nam Le, fiction editor of “Harvard Review”: Born in Vietnam and raised in Australia, Nam Le’s first novel, “The Boat,” received the Pushcart Prize, the Melbourne Prize for Literature and the best debut of 2008 by “New York Magazine.” 11 a.m. to noon May 19, PUB 258C.

• Reading by poet Mary Szybist: The author of “Incarnadine” won the 2013 National Book Award for Poetry. 11 a.m. to noon May 20, PUB 258B.

• Release party for Clark College’s 2014-2015 “Phoenix” literary journal. Readings by student authors; free copies for guests. 3 to 4 p.m. May 21, PUB 161.

• Talk by Karen Karbo: The author’s four New York Times Notable Books include “The Stuff of Life,” a memoir about her father’s last year of life. Followed by the English department awards ceremony. 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 21, PUB161.

• “Clark Crossings,” a student and faculty reading: noon to 1 p.m. May 22, PUB 258C.
