I think Marc Boldt made what may very well be the smartest move possible by filing for the position of Clark County council chair as an independent candidate instead of filing as a Republican Party candidate for several good and solid reasons. There has been growing public dissatisfaction with both the Republican and the Democrat parties at the federal and state levels for several years and there is a strong opinion in Clark County that funding for the new Columbia River Crossing Bridge was opposed by many Southwest Washington Republican members of the state Legislature.
In the May 13 Columbian story “Boldt to run, but not in the GOP,” Boldt is quoted as saying that “about half of Clark County voters don’t identify as (members of) either party.” I agree with Boldt’s comment because I’ve been finding more and more that Clark County residents are increasingly reluctant to admit being affiliated with any political party.
I think Marc Boldt will truly be able to more successfully campaign as an independent candidate, running as a candidate for the people, rather than waging a campaign supporting Republican Party goals. I congratulate him for filing as an independent candidate.
