NATIONAL HISTORY BEE & BOWL

Alfonso Gonzalez, a junior at Columbia River High School, was one of five students from Washington state to advance to the National History Bee & Bowl — High School Division last month in Washington, D.C. Gonzalez did not advance to the finals, but answered some questions correctly and credited his high school classes for helping him come up with the answers.


INTERNATIONAL DECA CONFERENCE

Heritage High School students Cade Delong and Whitney Hensley earned 6th place, with 120 teams competing, at the International DECA conference, last month in Orlando, Fla. Delong and Hensley wrote a 50-page business plan for their school’s student store, Wolf Den Café, winning National Gold Certification.

These Heritage students also qualified to compete at the international conference: Manuel Gonzalez, Jarod Luedecker, Trevor Murphy and Elise Standiford. Luedecker and Murphy competed as a team in Sports Research and Operations using the Portland Spartans as a company. They earned ninth place out of more than 150 teams.

PORTLAND POLICE CADET ACADEMY GRADUATES

Three students from the Clark County Skills Center Criminal Justice Program graduated from the Portland Police Cadet Academy on April 26. Albert Osario-Jaimes, from Camas High School; Austin Parrish, from Battle Ground High School; and Irina Popova, from Summit View High School all plan to work in the Cadet Program as part of their internship in the fall, as seniors.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARS

These students were honored by the Vancouver Branch of American Association of University Women for excellence in math, science and technology:

Evergreen High School: Brooke Lillie, math; Ginger Hunt, science; and Shannel Unlayao, technology.

Fort Vancouver High School: Jhoana Hernández-Avante, math; Austyn Young, science; and Maria Renteria, technology.

Henrietta Lacks Health and Bioscience High School: Karina Paul, math; Jala Alamin, science; and Haley Breen, technology.

Heritage High School: Heather Maedl, math; Brittney LaFave, science; and Lacey McPoil, technology.

Hudson’s Bay High School: Elizabeth Bronder, math; Alyssa Resurreccion, science; and Samantha Pavlich, technology.

Legacy High School: Cassidy Ramirez, math; and Jessee Zimmerly, technology.

Mountain View High School: Brittany Beaudoin, math; Ritika Jain, science; and Emily Leland, technology.

Skyview High School: Madison Snyder, math; Michelle Chang, science; and Laurel Bingham, technology.

Union High School: Christine Wey, math; Haeun Jung, science; and Samantha Schauer, technology.

Vancouver iTech Preparatory: Kaitlyn Hill, math; Astrid DuBois, science; and Sequoia Pullella-Barca, technology.

Vancouver School of Arts and Academics: Tara Umesh, math; Hailey Johnson, science; and Emma Josephson, technology.
